National Design Application
There are important differences between the Japanese design registration system and the design registration systems of other countries. For example, Japan is unique in that effective design protection can be obtained even for primarily functional designs, and that a broader scope of protection can be established through the use of the Related Design System.
Considering such differences between countries, we provide fine-tuned and easy-to-understand advice to our international clients from the strategic standpoint.
In addition to initiating application procedures, we also handle applications already in prosecution. For example, if a notice of reasons for rejection has already been issued for a filed Japanese design application, we would be happy to assist with the procedures for responding.

Hague International Application Designating Japan
Since Japan is a member of the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement, it is possible to designate Japan in Hague applications. We can represent our clients both as an agent before the WIPO in the international phase and as an agent before the Japan Patent Office in the Japanese national phase. In particular, please contact us for support at the national stage in Japan, in such matters as responding to a refusal notice.

Whether our clients are planning a product launch or assessing potential infringement risks, we provide professional, cost-effective design searches finely tailored to their objectives.
The Japan Patent Office offers J-PlatPat with an English interface, allowing the public to search Japanese design registrations. However, Japan has complex, unique practices—such as related designs, secret designs, and a distinctive classification system—that can make it difficult to ensure complete and accurate results.
Our experienced team combines legal expertise and practical search know-how to identify relevant prior designs efficiently and minimize the risk of missing critical references.
Once we know the goal of a search and the scope of investigation, we promptly provide a detailed cost estimate and propose the most effective search strategy.

In addition to the above, we are always available for any other consultations related to designs as intellectual property.
