Case1. Design Registration No. 1082109 “Blocks for Construction”

The main feature of this design is the shape of a groove in the center of the block. A design registration was sought for this part.
The official guidelines of the Japanese Patent Office read “a part that cannot be deemed comparable with other designs shall not be regarded as a partial design” and provides an example of “packaging bottle” as shown below. Because of this guideline, one may not be able to freely define the scope of a partial design.

Case2. Design Registration No. 1098167 “Wine Cellar for A System Kitchen”

The inside of the cellar is shown by solid lines. If one wishes to apply for a design that is rarely seen from outside, one should clearly disclose the shape by making use of figures showing the design with doors or lids open, cross-sectional views, or exploded views.
An example of a design that cannot be regarded as a partial design according to the official guidelines.
